I’ve finally dealt with my dead Gallery2 installation. It used to house my web gallery and that of 2 friends. It was stable for years. I never did upgrade to the very last production version and wound up regretting it. During a hosting change of operating system, the installation died. And I couldn’t fix it.
I had been using that installation of Gallery2 since 2007. It housed not just all my pictures but also my comments. I recovered the pictures. I couldn’t recover the comments. I’m not even sure if I remember everything I wrote on the pictures.
The new implementation uses WordPress. I have the look similar to the old Carbon theme I liked. All grays and shades of gray. I finally get to use one of my favorite lightboxes: Highslide. I don’t see this used in a photo gallery often. I still like it more than any other lightbox I’ve run across.
I would still prefer to have the files structure on the backend in folders like Gallery2 but at least I was able to get the files set up in logical folders in the front end interface with the help of a plugin.
The features I would still like to implement are improved navigation in the form of things like breadcrumbs and/or a ‘up’ or ‘back’ button. The left side bar for navigation is also poor now. I want the list of all albums to indicate hierarchy. This feature might be called ‘tree’ in the WordPress world.
2015.08.31 Update: I’ve added a plugin named Easy Image Display to display recently added photos.
